“Big Monitors” is a new musical project that in “Knots and Notes” mixes original compositions with a tribute to William Parker. Let’s just say that it’s a free interpretation of a tireless musician and composer who offers us his perspectives and world views through music.
“Giancarlo Tossani and Big Monitors have created a new sound from my compositions. Giving it new life is always an exciting treat. Also I enjoyed the original compositions. Getting to the essence of the music, unique arrangements and performances not only of my music but their own compositions. “Knots and Notes” rises up and takes off . All that we can ask of any musician to be oneself. This music finds its own voice. A voice that is much needed in this time. Great Job. Thank you for the Music.” (William Parker)
“Knots and Notes” is not intended to be a simple tribute or homage to William Parker. Let’s just say that it’s a free interpretation of a tireless musician and composer who offers us his perspectives and world views through music. After all, not only is jazz a system of musical forms and expressions it could also be considered a microcosm of the world we live in. The “knot” is a broad and powerfully ambivalent metaphor. It can represent tangled impediment and oppression but can also be appreciated for its ornamentations and complexities. Similar to the working relationships and complexities of the musicians on this recording, this “Knot”, is a respectful attempt to tie our music to the music and emotional insights of William Parker. Some time ago the young Michele Bondesan submitted some compositions by William Parker to me. This generational “knot” helped to inspire the ideas behind this recording project. Jazz is also this: a knot between generations.
