“Soundcheck” video

A soundcheck is an essential part of preparing for a live music performance. It is a process in which the band checks and adjusts the sound of their instruments and equipment, as well as the balance of the overall sound.
Sometimes, the soundcheck can be a somewhat tedious and repetitive process. However, while some musicians may find soundchecks less exciting than actual performances, they represent an essential and necessary part of the live music experience.
For this occasion we got together, me and the “Synapser” musicians, after quite some time.
In this video, I have collected some beautiful photos taken by Dino Ferruzzi, which I believe tell the story of the different emotions of our human and musical reunion.
The music in the background is a fragment of our interpretation of “Beauty Is a Rare Thing”, a tune by Ornette Coleman, a great musician we wanted to pay homage to on our first Cd. We precisely gave this album the same meaningful title as the song. That was in 2004. And even today, beauty is a rare thing.

“The collective and symbiotic interplay of Synapser shines through their free and sharp improvisation over compositions characterized by a no-frills writing and very dense themes. (Marco Delle Fave, Jazzit).

What better words could one use to describe our attempt to create a combo which tries to be greater than the sum of its parts by building a space in which improvisation can truly lead to instantaneous composition and multi-dimensional textures? After all, the very name of the band represents a programmatic commitment to a collective (and – why not? – political) principle of constant communication: Synapser stands for “maker/connector of synapses”. Within that ecosystem (or system of echoes) which a band is, every one of its members has an active role in creating, relaying and transmitting signals to each other. In doing so, Synapser tries to give shape to a jazz dialogue that is continuously questioned, in an attempt to keep the consciousness, passion and intelligence of this music always on their toes.
